Hi! I've been looking online for a few days now to find information and patterns for breast-feeding friendly garb. I've found some, but have found that no one seems to have either patterns or a merchant who would sell them.

SO - I've been making alterations of my own to garb, and at the last event, I got LOTS of comments from women who wanted to know where I'd gotten them... Now, I am asking the following question to those who may be interested:

If either easy-to-use patterns or pre-sewn garments were available for purchase, that were nursing-friendly, would you be interested in purchasing them?

Depending on the response, I'm seriously considering making both and offering them for sale through the SCA...

Thanks for any feedback!

Hi! This is going to sound really funny, and in some ways it is… Of course, if you are in MY situation, it’s not quite so funny… At least, not to me.

See, it’s like this – I’m pregnant (I know, big duh). The issue now is clothing. I now officially have 2 pairs of pants that will be relegated to the back of the closet until after the baby is born (and then hopefully I’ll be able to wear them again – if the goddess is kind to me).

I also have NO clothing to fit into at this point besides to pairs of crop stretch pants, which will only work as long as the weather is good – and I have no skirts or dresses that will fit, either.

The issue? My hips. Not my waist, not my legs… just my hips and butt. If it was the waist, I could simply pull out the darts on the pants – but no, it’s the hips – no way to widen them.

Also, I have no fabric to MAKE new clothes. While I have stuff that’s been sitting for a while for projects, they’re all already cut – so, nothing usable to make clothing with. So – I’m asking, BEGGING even – if you have 3-4 yards of fairly good-quality solid fabric, OR if you have pregnancy slacks in my size, please email me… I really need to have some help here, as I work in an office environment – I can’t wear stretch crop athletic pants all the time…

Thank you!

hi all
sorry for the short notice, I received this email from the church of craft group

"Craft Supply Swap this weekend!

It's Sunday, May 27th, from 11:00 am - 4:00 pm.
We're at The 100th Monkey Studio, which is at 110 SE 16th Ave. It's the low, green building at the corner of SE 16th and Ankeny. There is plenty of street parking.

Here are some details for you:

- Please bring any art or craft materials that you aren't using anymore. We're open to pretty much everything -- paints, fabrics, yarn, beads, buttons, pens and pencils, clay, paper . . . .

The only stuff we're not looking for are those random cast-off things you've been hanging onto in case that perfect project comes along. You know . . . those paper-towel tubes and the guts of that old transistor radio. :-)

- There is no admission fee for this event. We do ask that you bring something to swap. The 100th Monkey Studio will have a collection jar to take donations for their Art Scholarship fund, in case you'd like to donate a bit.

- You are welcome to take any art or craft materials you can use from the swap. We're not placing limits on what people take, but we hope everyone will respect that this is a community event, and leave plenty for everyone else. We are donating a large portion of the leftover material to Outside In.

- We will have three free craft tables going on during the day, so you can also hang out and make stuff:

From 11:00 - 1:00, we'll be making Fabric Scrap Flower Pins.

From 1:00 - 3:00, we'll be making Refrigerator Magnets, using all kinds of found objects.

From 3:00 - 4:00, we'll be making Fused Fabric Greeting Cards. "

I checked and found out that renting the community room isn't ENTIRELY free... but if we keep it pristine, I get my undeposited check back. Also, they only rent it out after office hours. So, if we want to meet during the day, we can use my place. We just need folding tables and such.

Here's some of the questions I posed in my other post:

~~~
So, who's interested and what are your opinions?
~Community room or my place? I'm fine with it either way.
~What date? A Saturday or Sunday? During the day it would have to be at my place, unless a third option pops up. I'm planning on being gone from 9/29 to 10/9 (long overdue travel), which includes a convention... it would be nice to get some work done before that trip... but that's pretty short notice.
So, here's some possible dates:
9/2
9/3
9/9
9/10
9/16
9/17
Or into October... Any thoughts?
Suggestions? Ideas? Anyone interested?
~~~~~~

Now that i am finally close to having a dress form [and going blonde again hopefully], I'm going to try my hand at doing Penny Priddy from Buckaroo Banzai. Future, not period stuff, but i have some of that too... I cross the time periods rather frequently [hey, maybe THAT'S why I keep getting headaches].

Bubblegum pink or hot pink... not easy to find. I'll be hitting Fabric Depot tomorrow... hopefully I don't have to harm anyone to get to my preferrred sections of the store. From what it sounds like, it's quite the crowd during their sales.

The fringe will have to be as cheap as humanly possible... has anyone ever dyed the stuff? I may resort to that... but would rather not. Could get disasterous.

~ Also, any anyone know where I can get a cheap Hakama? Another Penny thing.

Every year they hold a fundraiser for local charities in the PDX area, and try to give back a little something to the community. This year, the troupe decided on the Portland Community Transitional School (http://www.transitionalschool.org).

In order to do this in style, the troupe is requesting donations of durable fabrics in red and green to make toy bags and "Santa" outfits for the event. We'd like to arrive dressed to the 9's as Santa's helpers with Captain Kringle and his elven pirates. Funds are tight, as with everyone, so if people have cotton velveteens, cotton trigger or heavy twill in greens and reds, it would really make things easier to get the costumes together. I'm going to be doing the sewing as a donation for the troupe, and need the fabric as quickly as possible. We'd also like some fake white fur for trim, if possible... Please let us know via email through Tribe. And if you'd like to donate toys, clothing, art supplies or books, please also contact us. We have the ability to take donations locally as well.
Fire and Steel Proudly Presents:
Pirates of the Christmas Season
Each year, Fire and Steel passes the hat for donations to worthy causes. These mainly benefit those within our SCA community, and help those in need. This year, we’d like to do even more. The Community Transitional School in Portland, Oregon, is in need of assistance for children from Kindergarten to 8th grade. The school opens its doors to children who would otherwise be unable to attend school due to many different reasons, whether it be medical, financial, or residential. Providence Medical Center helps fund this not-for-profit school, in an attempt to make sure that every child has the chance to have a good education.
Fire and Steel would like to ask your help in assisting these children this year as our main fund-raiser. We are asking for new, unwrapped toys, books and art supplies or art kits for them. Monetary donations will also be taken at each of our performances, and the money will be used to purchase needed supplies for the school. Each performance, we will reserve the front row for donations, and a cashbox will be available to drop money in. In December, we will arrive at the school and perform for them, dressed in our finest Santa’s Helpers costumes. All those wishing to assist in handing out toys and gifts, please contact us no later than Autumn War, at frederick_the_reckless@yahoo.com.

Our performance schedule will be as follows:

Sea Dog Nights 7/20-7/24
Long and Short Tourney 8/24-8/27

You see, he's the troupe leader of an amazingly wonderful fire-dancing group called Fire and Steel. Over the past 3 years, he's gotten TONS of video capture, and only recently have we gotten the computer upgraded enough to transfer the video over to the computer to place onto a DVD for sale to help promote them. Unfortunately, shite happened last night... Here's what's going on in his words:

"Recently, due to wear and tear, our camcorder, a Sony Hi8 Handycam, went belly-up. If you have upgraded from this format and are looking to sell or donate your old one, contact me off-list. I can't afford much, But I'll see what else I can barter. What I'm looking for is preferrably one with nightshot, USB compatible. The USB compatibility is the main thing I need, as we are FINALLY getting our footage (3 years worth) transferred to computer, and are ramping up to FINALLY get a DVD put out. Even if you are not looking to sell, I do need to borrow one, as I am in the middle of getting the footage from the Gathering transferred to our computer. Since the old camera is so screwed up it won't give me back my tape (thankfully, NOT from an event, just some firejam stuff) it goes without saying that it's useless for the task. So if you have one to lend for a couple weeks, I'd be grateful for that as well. Hope to hear from someone--anyone.

Frederick the Reckless,
Troupe Leader,
Fire and Steel"

If you want to check out some of the videos and pics, please feel free to visit the yahoo groups http://groups.yahoo.com/group/antirafterdark/, and http://groups.yahoo.com/group/antirafterdark2/ .

In addition, this year Fire and Steel has decided to hold a fund-raiser for the Portland Community Transitional School, to help the children have a good holiday season. http://www.transitionalschool.org/ is their website. If you feel the need to help out, the troupe is gathering new, unwrapped toys, books and art supplies currently so that they can be handed out at Christmas / Kwanzaa / Yule / Solstice-time. They are also gathering monetary donations to purchase said items. So far, the troupe has gathered over $260 in donations, in the course of a 3-day camp-out with a non-sanctioned SCA group. They're hoping that each event they end up going to will yield as much, if not more, so these kids have a great holiday.

I'm working on some hand-sewing myself...

I decided for his birthday that I would make my s.o. a new kilt shirt, based off the one he already has. He wanted the sleeves a little different, so I made them that way. The shirt looked pretty good, or so I thought, until I had him pop it over his head. My measurements, while in keeping with what his original shirt had, were not *exactly* within keeping with his own.

You see, he wanted sword-sleeves; that is to say, cuffs from wrist to about 3/4 of the way up the forearm, and THEN have the sleeve go all poofy. I figured I had it covered by making the sleeve same length as his original sleeve (which didn't have the cuff that way) and then adding the cuff. Apparently, somewhere, something went horribly, horribly wrong... The sleeve was about 4 inches too short...

HOWEVER - (to quote Val Kilmar in "Real Genius") These types of setbacks are sometimes what we need to move forward. I had foolishly attached the cuff the wrong way, so it would have been practically impossible to remove them from the sleeve and simply re-attach a newly cut one. As I sat there, staring at the sleeves and contemplating kicking everything into a corner and having a royal hissy fit, my eyes fell onto my "bible".

Otherwise known to those in the trade as the "Complete Guide to Needlework" by Reader's Digest. Now, don't shy away because it's by the Reader's Disgust (my mom's joke). While the original printing was done in 1979, and it was only re-printed with updated pictures and suggestions in 1981, the book itself is actually a godsend to anyone wanting to learn anything new about Embroidery, Needlepoint, Knitting, Applique, Quilting, Patchwork, Macrame, Crochet, Rug-making, and Lacework. It gives definitions of what you'll need to begin basic projects, descriptions and pictures of each, how to use them, and then walks you through basic and advanced patterns with both pictures and descriptive texts... But I'm getting off my story here...

So, I look at my "bible", and I look at the sleeve, and I start to think to myself that there must be a way that I can add an extra 4 inches to the top of each of the sleeves without too much notice... And I remember something I did to a wedding dress a LONG time ago... smocking... I look it up and find it in the book and find that I never did finish the actual smocking to the dress, I simply did the gathering... (oops). And I find the most masculine pattern I could find that would allow for some give, and would allow for the seam to hide a bit once it was sewn on.

SO - I'm doing what's known as a surface honeycomb pattern onto a 9-inch wide piece of fabric. If you want to learn more about it and only smocking (and you don't have "the bible"), you can check out the following link, which seems to have some pretty good explainations of different smocking techniques:

http://www.geocities.com/Wellesley/3351/honey.html#honey

I'll see if I can't get my s.o. to pose for some shots of the shirt once I have it completely done. Thankfully we don't start tourneying for another 3 months, so I have time. Yay... *sigh*
I think we could help him out... what do you say to Friday, July 15th, at 10:00 pm, we get as many scadians in pirate and gypsy garb as possible to "raid" the place? how many are interested? one thing though, let's try to tip the dj at least one dollar apiece, OK?

Leather is a distinctive craft, and quite different from everyday sewing and clothing creation. First, there is the specific type of leather, whether it be pig (suede), cow or deer. Also, the thickness involved can make working with it difficult, depending on what you're making, and whether you have the right tools.

My leatherwork has been mainly in collars and cuffs, and are made for fairly heavy-duty use. They can be custom-made, depending on what my customers want, and can come in a variety of colors. I prefer to keep them simple, elegant and sturdy. While I appreciate the idea of "pretty" leather collars, and will create them, I also feel that it's necessary to create leather collars and cuffs that can be seriously tested and used without fear of a rivet busting loose.

What has anyone else done with leatherworking?
