I moved to Portland 7 months ago, and still haven't gotten back into the swing of things. I think I'm just a little stranded.
I learned to sew from my mother-but I can't fallow a pattern to save my life.
I learned to knit from my sweet neighbor (but I still need her to take me and my tangled project in)
And I really have no idea where to start in Portland.
Im looking for:
Guidance.
A sewing machine.
Connections to a good fabric store.
My own knitting store.
Help on knitting projects.
Thanks, Sarah

Re: Newbie
Wed, January 17, 2007 - 5:54 AMLOL - it's not as overwhelming as you might think it is. :-) I think perhaps you might try some simple patterns once you get a good sewing machine.
I'd recommend heading over to Fabric Depot (SE 122nd and Stark). They have really good deals on what I tend to call "test" fabric ($1.00 / yard stuff that you won't worry about messing up), good QuikSew patterns for cheap, and a Montevilla sewing center all in the same area - you can pick up a good, used sewing machine there for a decent price. If not there, head over to Stark and SE 82nd ave Montevilla center, and they'll fix you right up (that's where I got my serger).
Not so good on the knitting, here - I can do a single perl, and that's about it... I crochet, more than anything. Fabric Depot has quite a bit on the yarn, but if you want something that's specific to knitting / crochet, the only place that comes to mind for me is the one near my home, on SW hwy 99 and Hall. There's a knitting store next door to the decorette shop in the lower level of the mall there - there's also a Jo Ann Fabric's in the mall as well, so if you're lost, just drop in and ask them - they know where it is.
Good luck! And if you need help, let us know!
